SCREEN- 1 in 300 children are born with hidden cardiac conditions. By doing our 12 lead EKG screening, we help find and fix the problem to prevent the tragedy of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in a child. By partnering with local hospitals, Fire/EMS agencies, businesses, service clubs and concerned individuals , Play With Heart is bringing these lifesaving events to communities. Beginning in 2014 in Colorado, we are now expanding nationally.
SAVE- PWH was started in 2005 and began to donate AED packages to schools and athletic teams, not just in Colorado but nationally (Youth lacrosse league in Illinois, Summer camp in New York etc.) Since then, we have given almost 200 units away and have saved four children. Whenever we do one of our cardiac screens, we find a local donor (service club, business, hospital, or an individual) who will fund the donation. They are recognized at a formal donation ceremony at the screen and their logo is applied to the AED to further publicize their commitment to youth safety in their community.
EDUCATE- When we donate an AED package, the donation includes 10 free certifications in CPR/AED use for the staff, coaches, and/or parents. PWH will not simply drop an AED off without having training as this is like "buying a computer without software". We feel a good AED program includes this training where they will discuss specific emergency procedures for their site, placement of the AED, training on the Chain of Survival for SCA (911, CPR, Defibrillation, ACLS), maintenance procedures for their unit and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) for the emotional element of responding to a real event.
